Automated Molding of Surgical System Components

The assembly highlighted here is a critical part of a state-of-the-art robotic surgical system. At Chemtech Plastics, we invested more than $1 million in two high-tech robotic assembly cells to manufacture this product for our customer.

With our strong background in complex injection molding and a team of automation engineering specialists, we developed an efficient, repeatable process for manufacturing high-quality parts at the rate of 25K per week through each work cell. We allocated significant resources to research and development, system debugging, and final integration of all assembly line components.

Producing the complete assembly requires delicate insert molding, precise buildup of the molded disks and two molded plates, and automated Hipot and continuity testing. All of this takes place on a fully automated assembly line in located in a clean environment. We built the first cell in 2011, which manages more than one million assemblies per year with zero-defect quality. This program was so successful that we built a second automation cell in 2012 to double our capacity. With advancements in technology, this line operates with even greater efficiency and produces the same exceptional level of quality.

Constructed from polycarbonate, the assembly features dimensions of 7” in length x 3” in width. The high degree of automation makes the process very stable and repeatable, resulting in consistent quality parts that support a non-invasive surgical application. Based on our extraordinary efforts and demonstrated technical achievement, the client has awarded us substantial other business. As one of our finest accomplishments, this production line intrigues every guest we tour through our factory floor.
