Relocating Injection Molds in Serial Production

by Superadmin / Thursday, 13 March 2025 / Published in Company News

Manufacturers around the globe are beginning to adjust to new tariffs and trade regulations in the economic market. In order to avoid the effects of these newly imposed tariffs, many companies are looking for U.S. injection molding partners they can trust to transfer programs currently running serial production outside of the U.S.

How to Effectively Transfer Production to the U.S.

Transferring production projects currently running serial production takes extra care and planning to avoid missed or late deliveries. Determining the time required to requalify molds to a new production location takes considerable time to complete, depending upon part complexity and the amount of verification/validation that needs to be completed.

Normally, there is a controlled sample, which could include a run-at-rate study, followed by an FAI report and capability study before a PPAP can be submitted. If this includes additional product testing, it can take months before the mold can be restarted running approved product.

Chemtech Plastics: A Trusted Partner for Large-Scale Transfers

Fortunately, Chemtech Plastics already has a proven, in-depth APQP process process in place for serial production transfers. Driven by a massive transfer of hundreds of part numbers in one transfer, Chemtech developed a way of planning for such a large amount of activity flowing through at one time. In this case, multiple stages were planned to get the most urgent products addressed first. Chemtech was able to complete all stages of the transfer in under six months.

Open communication is a key element in the planning process. All stakeholders must have input into the planning process. The timeline needs to be clear, well-understood, and achievable. Working together with our customers and conducting the required
planning, molds can be transferred in a timely manner, with minimal disruption to the supply chain.
